SPEAKING 49 Wildlife and national parks South Africa is one of the best destinations for a safari. Its wildlife is the richest in the world. For this reason, the South African government invest a lot of money in natural parks and reserves. The two most important ones are: South Africa is one of the largest countries in Africa and has a population of about 58 million people. It has three capitals: Pretoria (northeast) is the seat of the government, Bloemfontein (centre) is the juridical capital and Cape Town (southwest) is the legislative capital and the seat of the Parliament. The biggest city is Johannesburg, which is the business centre of the country. South Africa was a British and a Dutch colony (it gained independence in 1934); today the most common languages are English and Afrikaans, but there are eleven official languages. The land South Africa occupies the southern part of the African continent. Its landscapes are extremely varied: mountainous regions, beaches, lakes, deserts, waterfalls, rivers and canyons. It is also the land of diamond and gold mines . Most of the territory is made of high, flat areas called plateaux . Some of them are very high, between 2,000 and 3,000 metres. To the east, south, and west of the plateau lands there is a mountainous region called the Great Escarpment that consists of steep slopes and runs for 5,000 kilometres. Another typical landscape is the veld , a flat, wide rural territory covered in grass or low scrubs which is generally used as farmland. The highest mountain is Mafadi, 3,446 metres high, which belongs to a mountainous chain called Drakensberg, in the eastern part of the country. Kruger National Park, which offers an excellent chance to explore its vast landscapes and spectacular African wildlife. All of Africa s iconic safari species elephants, lions, cheetahs, rhinos, buffalos, giraffes, hippos, leopards and zebras live here; KwaZulu-Natal Reserve, which is located in the area of the Zulu people, the most numerous ethnic group of the country. It offers spectacular landscapes, with beaches, sunny weather, green hills and the chance to see the big five (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino) in their natural habitat. There are animals that live only in South Africa. Two of them are kudus, herbivorous antelopes, and lycaons, or African wild dogs.
