They sounded the bell twice, and continued, Cursed be the spirit that stole his food and wine! Amen! they concluded. They closed the book and blew the candle out28 repeating, Amen! All of a sudden, Faustus and Mephistopheles sent fireworks29 among the guests, who started shouting in terror. They thought it was the ghost who was going to kill them all! While the room was full of smoke and everyone was crying, the two devils started hitting them violently on their heads and then disappeared in a loud terrifying laugh. 28. blew out: (blow-blew-blown) extinguished. 29. fireworks: small explosives used for amusement. 49
